What’s your Bailiwick ?

At Bailiwick Legal we are frequently asked the meaning behind our name.

Bailiwick is a noun and it’s modern use is defined as:  the sphere in which one has superior knowledge or authority : a special domain  (Merriam Websters Dictionary)

The first known use of bailiwick was in the 15th century deriving from traditional Middle English word for ‘bailif’ (a Sherrif) and "wik," a Middle English word for "dwelling place" or "village."  It was used to refer to “ the person responsible or in authority for a particular area”(the Sherriff). Over time this concept of a sphere of responsibility was applied to skills and expertise rather than a physical location and by the 19th Century it’s special domain use was dominant.

Considered an old-fashioned word nowadays you will still hear it mentioned in reference to a specialist skill set and area of authority or knowledge. Here at Bailiwick Legal (being a a firm of modern legal minds yet with traditional client values) we thought it perfectly applied to our area of knowledge and speciality hence Bailiwick Legal!

Out & About
Christmas and New Year 2018-19

The Bailiwick Legal team enjoyed some time off over the Christmas and new year holidays for some rest and relaxation. While most of us stayed local and did the customary waist expanding with family, Karolina enjoyed a family getaway to Queensland. We are all back on board fully ready for a big 2019, including a not too distant arrival of Kim's little one!

Meet the team

We would like to help you get to know us a little better by introducing members of our team. This month we introduce Kim Jones, one of our Solicitors.

Kim arrived in Perth in 2010 to travel and visit family, and loved WA so much she never left.  Kim started at Bailiwick Legal in May 2016, and works with clients on a variety of commercial matters, including with employment and contractual issues and commercial disputes. Kim is expecting her first child next month, and is excited about her new role as a mum.  Hopefully she has been taking notes from our partner Karolina about how to successfully juggle family and work life.

"2018 was a very exciting year for Bailiwick Legal. We attended a number of industry events, such as the WAFarmers conference in March and the WA Tourism conference in September.

This was our first year sponsoring the Tourism Council WA, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know people within the tourism industry.  They are a very friendly bunch and passionate about their industry.

I think Western Australia has so much to offer in terms of travel and unique experiences. I have a particular soft spot for the Kimberley. It is my husband’s home ground, and we try to get up north when we can to go camping and fishing."
